ANNIE MCWILLIAMS ANDREWS

Annie McWilliams Andrews was born on April 20th, 1935 in rural Wilcox County, Newberry, Alabama (about 20 miles south of Selma, Alabama).; the third of five (5) siblings, of which all preceded her in death (Willie McWilliams as an infant in 1927, Eddie J. McWilliams in 2001, William McWilliams in 2010, James McWilliams in 2013, born to the late Anthony McWilliams and Edith Bonner McWilliams. Also preceding her in death is her youngest daughter, Deidre Andrews Abdul- Rahim in 2004.

Annie was baptized at Mt. Olive AME Church, Newberry, Alabama, grew up in a religious home and community, attended public school, graduated from Selma University in 1956, moved to NYC, NY where she attended and graduated from City University of NY- Medger Evers College. Annie was employed by City Bank (in the IBM field), then by NYC Government: The Dept. of Social Services, and retired in December 1997 from the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation as a Financial Assistant Controller. She worked in diversified capacities; such as, clerical (from clerk to supervising clerk), investigations (from investigator to supervising health care investigator), and financial analysis (financial manager then as a financial controller).

Annie was very involved in her community as president of the 233rd Street Block Association, member of the Laurelton Community Block Association, member of the Laurelton Garden Club. At an early age in NYC, she became a Catholic and went through all the sacraments, and moved to the Rosedale- Laurelton area in 1969. Annie attended St. Clare Roman Catholic Church, and was active in many church services and activities: extraordinary Eucharistic ministry, president of the Youth Committee, member of the Hospitality Committee and the Rosary Altar Society, member and treasurer of the Family Life Committee, and member of the Consolation ministry. She served the Lord in many capacities until God called her into eternal life on November 28th, 2022.

Some of Annie’s travels took her to the Bible Land, the Holy Land and to Egypt. She summed up the travel to the Holy Land as “awesome”; “able to walk on the ground where Jesus was born and walked!”; “swam in the Dead Sea with her hat on!”; visited overlooking the place where David, seeking refuge, proclaimed the 23rd psalm; saw where Satan tried to tempt Jesus away from God’s will; visited where Jesus was held overnight for trial and crucifixion the next day.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Marvis Andrews of NYC, N.Y.; her granddaughter, Zakia Abdul- Rahim Walker (Lorenzo Quick Walker); her grandson, Derrick Ennis Grier Jr.; five great-grandchildren Devener Grice, Yazmeen Grice, Lorenzo Quick Walker II., Tariq Walker, Deidre Walker, all of Virginia; five great-great grandchildren- Devy’on, Ke’leya, Royalty, Ryleigh, Khloe, many dear nieces and nephews, relatives, and a host of friends; and two special friends, Carolyn Davis and Ora Isable of NYC, N.Y. and special cousin Dannie Peavy of Florida.

She is gone but not forgotten. We will miss her dearly. We love her but God loves her best.

  7. I met Annie 1977 is was 14 years old. She was barbecuing in her back yard. Annie had an air of Royalty about her… always giving good advice and was very loving. It has been a Blessing knowing her. When Annie and Marvis would come visit her late daughter Deidre here in North Carolina I made it my business to come see her. Marvis, Zakia, DJ and the entire family I will keep to you in my prayers.

  11. It saddens my heart that Annie has transitioned. I will surely miss her. I met Annie in 1982 through her late daughter Deidre. Then her granddaughter, Zakia and my daughter became friends. Even after Deidre
    moved south I kept in
touch with Annie over the years. Wishing Marvis, Zakia, DJ and the entire family God’s comfort and peace. You have our heartfelt prayers, condolences and love.
