Jacquelyn Henderson made her transition to heaven on the morning of Friday, November 11th, 2022, at her home in Cambria Heights, Queens, NY. She was surrounded by love and care, and passed gently in her sleep with her children, Christopher and Dawn, close by.
Jacquelyn was born on March 9th, 1960, to parents Lillie Bell Hill and Moses Sandford. She was raised in the South Bronx along with her sister Lillie Mae. They adored their older brother John Macmillian and despite their age gap, he was always a constant presence in their lives. Her sister describes their childhood as one of fun and camaraderie, saying “Jacquelyn was always that loving big sister to me.”
Jacquelyn graduated from Morris high school in 1978. She attended Ithaca college where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982. While at Ithaca, she met Oliver Henderson. They eventually married and had two beautiful children Christopher and Dawn. Although Oliver and Jacquelyn did not stay married, they remained lifelong friends.
After working as a paralegal for a few years, Jacquelyn earned an associates degree in nursing from Queensborough Community College and a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Molloy College. In 1998, she began her 22 year career as a labor and delivery nurse at Northwell Health, Long Island Jewish Hospital. Over the years, she also worked per diem at Winthrop hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital.
Jacquelyn was a beautiful soul with an unfaltering devotion to God. She was an active
member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she dutifully performed as an usher and as the ministry board president. Her friends and loved ones would describe her as a memorable coworker, friendly neighbor, supportive auntie, considerate friend, “true-blue” sister, and a precious mother. Jacquelyn’s children were her world, and she continues to mean the world to them.
Jacquelyn will be greatly missed by her children, Christopher and Dawn, sister, Lillie Mae,
son-in-law, Luther, grandson Luther Jr., nephews, Steven, Andre, Jerry Jr., and Terrance, nieces, Kimberly, Shari, Karen, Kyrstal, Renee, Sherise, Allison, and Alexis, ex-husband, Oliver, sister-in-laws, Ann-Marie, Carol, and Danielle, brother-in-laws, Jerry, Robert, and Clarence, cousins, Flora Mae, Jennifer, and Brenda, great nieces, Destiny, Si’ana, Jayla, Zara, and Alaura, great nephews, Noah, and Lamar, and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
Special and sincere thanks to her caregivers, Mercedes Holmes and Ertha-Kay
Mckoy-Campbell.
