WITH LOVE FROM THE FARQUHARSON FAMILY
ROY ANGUS FARQUHARSON

Roy Angus Farquharson departed this life on the evening of November 4, 2023. He was the only child born to
Edna and Angus Farquharson on October 25, 1930.
He was born in Ancon, Canal Zone, on the Isthmus of Panama. He attended elementary school in the small town
of Gamboa, Canal Zone, and received his high school diploma from the Instituto National de Panama.
Roy immigrated to the U.S. in 1954 to attend one of the most prestigious Historically Black Colleges and
Universities in Washington, D.C., Howard University. His interest lay in dentistry, but before he was able to
complete his college years, he was drafted into the U.S. Armed Forces and chose to become a member of the U.S.
Air Force.
In 1958, while on leave, Roy married the love of his life, Evelyn Rose Shaw. The two had met as teenage members
of the Christian Youth Organization (CYO) in Panama. The wedding occurred at St. Ignatius Church in Brooklyn,
New York, on December 27th.
They returned to his duty station in France as husband and wife and began their lifelong passion for travel. The
young couple traveled together throughout Europe, recording every memorable experience in pictures that filled
volumes of albums, as well as 8mm film they would share with friends and family. This love of travel would take
them around the world to exotic, historic, and distant lands – from the islands of the Caribbean to China,
Australia, Israel, and Dubai.
After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, where he served as an accountant, he and his wife Evelyn
returned to Brooklyn, New York to start a family. They rented an apartment on St.Marks Avenue and Roy went to
work for the Postal Service, where he remained until he retired from his Supervisory position, in 1995.
Roy Farquharson was a quiet, disciplined man. He was known as an avid softball player who began his love affair
with the game as a youth in Panama, continued as a pitcher in the Air Force, and when he returned home, he
could be found playing on weekends with his friends from the strong community of Panamanian expats living in
Brooklyn.
One of his cherished hobbies was photography. He was never without a camera in hand. He recorded every
detail of his life with his partner, friend, and wife Evelyn, and captured every important moment of his children’s
lives. He was a brilliant and gifted mathematician, whose patience made him the more likely candidate when the
children needed help with their math homework.
Roy was a rare class of man, loved by his family, respected by his friends, and admired by his colleagues. He was
above all, a devoted husband to his life partner Evelyn Rose Farquharson, a loving and caring father to his four
children Sandra (Sam) Mattingly, Ingrid Scantlebury, Sean Farquharson, and Roan Farquharson; an engagingly
mindful father-in-law to Beein Gim and Jelel Oller, a gentle GrandPop to seven lovely grandchildren: Danton,
Toland, Bryant, Jarid, Aren, Asher and Nora, and a generous, understanding brother-in-law to Nancy Jean Joseph.
His family grieves his passing and will forever remember his exemplary life. His memory is preserved in each one
of his children and grandchildren.

A Celebration of a Life Well Lived
