Sylvia Melvena Pryce

1941 - 2024

Sylvia Melvena Pryce
Sylvia Melvena Pryce led a rich and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion
to her family and her faith. From her roots in Jamaica to her journey to America, she touched the
lives of many with her warmth, wisdom, and talents.
Born on February 19, 1941, in Bath, a town in the Parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica, to Ivy and Eugine
Peynado, she was one of eight children, including Joel, Amy, Olga, Parkey, Stephen, the late
Evelyn, the late Gwenneth, Michael, and Sylvia herself.
Sylvia attended Bath Primary School before embarking on a career as a dressmaker and seamstress.
In 1963, she married her beloved husband, Joshua Pryce. Together, they were blessed with five
children: the late Sharon LeGrande, Daphney Walker, Velma Clairvil, Dalton Pryce, and Everton
Pryce. Along with her family, she embarked on a journey to America, where she dedicated many
years of her life to serving as a compassionate home health aide.
A devout servant of God, she encouraged her family to dedicate their hearts, minds, and souls fully
to serving Jesus. Her love for literature, particularly the Bible and poetry, speaks to her
appreciation for the written word and the beauty of expression. Sylvia also had a passion for
sewing, skillfully crafting her own garments and generously teaching her loved ones the art,
provided it never coincided with her cherished soap opera time!
Sylvia was blessed with a large and loving family that included numerous nieces, nephews, great-
nieces, and great-nephews. Regardless of where she was—be it Jamaica or New York—she was
always surrounded by loved ones. She leaves behind a legacy through her grandchildren: Garten,
Evette, Philomene, Earl Jr., Dianna, Jessica, Felisha, Ashton, Jonathan, Ashaunti, Everton Jr.,
Jayden, Dante, and Shante; and her great-grandchildren: Dominique, Nasir, Nahiem, Chae, Seth,
Malik, Garten Jr., Skyla, and Jyana. Her family circle also includes her sons-in-law, Esteven
Clairvil, Neville Walker, and the late Earl LeGrande; her daughter-in-law, Meigon Pryce; her
granddaughter-in-law, Yanira Headman; and her grandson-in-law, Jeffery Weaver, all of whom
she adored deeply.
In honoring Sylvia’s memory, may her family and friends find solace in the cherished moments
they shared and take comfort in knowing that her love will endure through generations. May she
rest in peace, surrounded by the love and gratitude of those whose lives she touched.
